Ask Cabramatta resident Ivan Pankiw what the highlight of his 20-plus years at Fairfield Patrician Brothers Junior Rugby League Football Club is and the answer is a simple one.
“Watching all the youngsters get out there and play is just really phenomenal,” he said. “You get a lot of self-satisfaction seeing a bunch of kids – who at first don’t know their left leg from their right leg – develop and learn the game.”
Pankiw is a life member of the Fairfield Patrician Brothers JRLFC who celebrate their 60 year anniversary in 2017.
Based at Carrawood Park in Carramar, the club participates in the Parramatta Junior Rugby League competition. This year they will field 10 teams.
“At one stage we were down to only three teams but the club has bounced back,” Pankiw said.
“It’s a great club with plenty of tradition and a good group of volunteers.”
Pankiw’s association with the club began in 1980’s courtesy of his two sons Paul and Michael.
The past president has done everything at the club from working on the barbecue to marking the fields and coaching.
“I love rugby league and being involved,” he said.
The club is hosting a 60th anniversary event on July 1.
