A two-year police hunt has ended with the suspect in a hit-and-run crash, which saw Trevor Fing lose an arm and leg, walking into a police station to hand himself in.
Newcastle crash investigation unit officers had been looking for the suspect since Fing was critically injured in the crash at Cams Wharf in Lake Macquarie on June 3, 2014.
Fing, a serial fraudster who had been released from prison in 2013 after serving part of his maximum nine-year jail term for laundering more than $1.7 million from stolen superannuation cheques, was lucky to survive the crash.
He had been riding his motorcycle south along Wild Duck Drive, which took motorists into Cams Wharf and the nearby Rafferty's Resort, when he was struck and thrown from his bike about 3.30pm.
Emergency services initially thought Fing may have struck a kangaroo, until debris on the road pointed to another vehicle.
He lost his right leg above the knee and right arm at the elbow.
Investigations identified a suspect but despite a hunt which stretched across state borders, they could not locate the offender.
A warrant was issued for his arrest.
On Wednesday, the now 29-year-old suspect walked into Boolaroo police station about 11am and was arrested.
He was taken to Belmont Police Station where he was charged with eight offences including dangerous driving occasioning grievous bodily harm, exceed speed by more than 45 km/h, and fail to stop after accident.
He was granted conditional bail to appear at Belmont Local Court on January 19.
