Police investigating husband of woman found dead in Guildford

The relationship between a woman who was found dead inside a burning home in Guildford this morning and her husband will be key to a police investigation into her death.

Emergency services found a 43-year-old man believed to be the husband of the woman outside the home on Clement Street about 3.35am on Tuesday.

Police said the man was assisting them with their investigation at Merrylands Police Station.

Superintendent Matt Appleton said police would inquire with friends of the couple about the status of their relationship.

“The relationship between the deceased and her husband is something that the investigators is looking at at the moment,” he said.

“The history between the gentleman and his wife is… certainly a line of inquiry.”

Mr Appleton said the couple’s two sons, aged 6 and 9, who were located at the scene alongside their father, were being cared for by family members.

He said the woman had not yet been formally identified

“The extent of the fire [has made identifying the woman] difficult at this stage.

“We believe that she was most likely a 30-year-old woman who lived at the location.”

Mr Appleton said police have been advised that the family were dual citizens but had lived in Australia for “a long time.”

Sniffer dogs were used as part of an investigation into the origin of the fire.

Inspector Bob McGowan, from Fire and Rescue NSW, said the blaze was extremely difficult to battle.

"We searched the area of the house that we could, but it's a pretty tough situation, when the roof tiles are dropping around you," he said.

"I can't praise [the firefighters] highly enough for the efforts they made to get in there and search."

Police urge with information to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
