Former students, friends and teachers gathered at Lansvale Public School on Friday morning to say farewell to Mrs Margaret Bentley, who is retiring after 28 years with the school.

A special assembly was held at 9am followed by an afternoon tea for staff and ex-staff who had worked with her in the afternoon.

Director of Public Schools Cathy Brennan presented Mrs Bentley with a retirement medal.

Mrs Bentley started volunteering at the preschool when her own children were attending, before moving to work at the school’s library.

“The library burnt down in ‘88, and we had to restock the library, so we got some demountables and they employed me to do that,” Mrs Bentley said.

“Then I ... started working in the office, and I’ve been here ever since.”

Mrs Bentley said the friendships she had developed were the most valuable part of her career at Lansvale Public School. She and her husband plan to enjoy retirement with travelling and spending more time with their grandchildren.
