Parramatta Eels Junior Rugby League crown season's best at presentation night

The Canley Vale Kookas were the big winners from the Shine Lawyers Parramatta Eels junior rugby league presentation night.

The club won the club of the year award and 14-year-old Caleb Tohi took home the Phil Carey player of the year award.

“I’m surprised, there’s just so much talent in this district,” Caleb said.

“To be chosen the best player, it’s amazing.”

The award takes into account both performance as well as participation in the club. Caleb, a second rower or centre who played both under 14’s and 16’s this season, said it had been a great season. “I couldn’t do it without the people at Kookas,” he said.

“It’s good to go out there and play with the boys every week and try to be a good mentor to the younger ones as they’re coming up.

“I’m not that old myself but a lot of people my age are going off to the wrong tracks.”

Canley Vale club secretary Valarie Uilou said the club of the year award “means a lot to a small club like Kookas”.

“With an award like that, it means that hopefully we’ll get more numbers with more volunteers helping on a weekly basis knowing that we’re the best club in the Parramatta district,” she said. “That holds a lot of prestige.”
