Fairfield City council mayoral vote to be re-counted

A re-count of the mayoral vote for Fairfield City has been requested by candidate Del Bennett.

Following Frank Carbone’s 135-vote win over the Australian Labor Party’s candidate Cr Bennett on Saturday night, the Returning Officer confirmed on Monday morning that a re-count had been requested.

However, he was not at liberty to confirm who had requested it.

Cr Bennett confirmed to the Champion that she had requested the recount, which is free of charge.

“I have requested a recount which has been agreed to,” Cr Bennett said.

Cr Carbone said that he was “confident” the result would stand.

Any count with a margin of less than 100 votes would trigger an automatic re-count, but a margin of more than 100 votes requires a formal request from a candidate, or a decision by the Returning Officer, to re-count.

It is not yet clear if the re-count will focus solely on the preference votes or the entire vote.

The process is likely to continue until late in the week.
