THE popular Redhead Surf Lifesaving Club has escaped any damage after an adjoining public toilet block was blown up by hoodlums.
Police said an explosion rocked the toilet block about 10pm on Tuesday, causing serious damage to the ceiling and roof of the toilets, as well as blowing out a window.
Police have established a crime scene and forensic specialists were called in on Wednesday morning to scour the area for clues.
Officers have described the attack as a “hoodlum incident”.
Redhead Surf Lifesaving Club president Mike McKey confirmed the club, popular with weddings and other functions, had not been damaged in the late-night attack.
The club was working with police to review closed circuit television footage to help identify suspects.
“Unfortunately it has become a regular thing, some degree of vandalism or graffiti down here,’’ Mr McKey said.
“I guess because it is a bit isolated, like a lot of surf clubs, it attracts that element.
“People do seem to congregate down around here and drink and want to play up.’’
