City takes steps to push for lifts

FAIRFIELD Council is giving a community campaign a lift.

It has written to Transport Minister Gladys Berejiklian, supporting a push for an elevator at Canley Vale station.

There are 67 steps on each side of the station with no ramp or elevator.

Commuters must use steps or walk 500 metres to cross to the other side of the station.

The council letter says in part: "Canley Vale station is an important transport hub serving a thriving growth community. A lift at this location has been endorsed by council as a priority . "

A petition has also been sent to residents near the station.

The government announced in June that the station was one of nine that would receive a multideck car park, and set aside $10 million for 70 extra spaces and a Kiss and Ride zone.
