Police have released footage showing the Westmead mother-of-one walking home from Parramatta Station shortly before she was killed on Saturday night.

Police believe Prabha Arun-Kumar was attacked with a sharp weapon in Amos Street, Westmead, at about 9.30pm.

The woman, who is aged in her 40s, had been on the phone to her husband, who lives in India with their 10-year-old daughter, when she was attacked.

Homicide Squad Commander, Detective Superintendent Michael Willing, stressed the police did not believe the crime was racially-motivated.

"We are really at a loss at this time as to who may be responsible"

Detective Superintendent Michael Willing

"We are really at a loss at this time as to who may be responsible," he said at a media briefing today at NSW Police Headquarters in Parramatta.

Mrs Arun-Kumar's husband has since flown in from India and is assisting police with their investigation.

"Her husband is understandably, extremely distressed," Detective Superintendent Willing said.

He has appealed for public assistance to solve this crime.

"We rely on the community to gain information into these sorts of crimes," Detective Superintendent Willing said.

Police believe Mrs Arun-Kumar walked from Parramatta station, up Argyle Street, then into the walkway near Parramatta Park before being attacked.

Westmead resident Arvand Amirian found her in a pool of blood suffering numerous neck injuries.

She was treated by paramedics before being taken to Westmead Hospital.

She died in hospital at 12.45am on Sunday.

Strike Force Marcoala, made up of local officers and homicide detectives, has been set up to investigate Mrs Arun-Kumar's death.

Anyone with information is urged to call Crime Stoppers.
