A group of Canley Vale High School's most impressive young minds are currently in training mode.
They will soon be put to the test for the annual Tournament of Minds - a competition in which students are called to solve a range of problems using skills, logic and teamwork.
It encourages students to think for themselves and work outside their comfort zones, without the safety net of their teachers.
This will be the fourth year Canley Vale students have taken part in the program.
They will take part in three challenges: maths engineering; applied technology; and social science.
The competing students will spend a day at the University of Western Sydney's Bankstown campus battling out the regional finals.
Year 9 student Julie Bui, 14, said she looked forward to the event.
"It makes me work harder," she said.
