The Champion asked, via its Facebook page, what residents thought about the street naming. These are some of the comments:
■Daniel Griffiths: Given that Fairfield's community includes a significant Assyrian/Chaldean/Syriac diaspora, I think it would be nice to name a street after a region of their former homeland.
■Jo Joe: Should be named after a person or event that has historical significance to the area.
■Carmen Martins: Should be named after a person with historical significance to the area.
We are in Australia and we need to bring out our history.
■Rania Bursic: Historical significance to the area, no debate needed. If the other councillors aren't happy, well they are more than welcome to go live in Iraq permanently and name all the streets over there.
■Halime Sevinc: Historical significance sounds good.
■Bruno Beira: If you mean 'before' European settlement then yes. If after, then migration hasn't ended, so what's the difference? Let's name everything after cook, bligh, macquarie, wentworth, phillip etc.
■Renaldo Saffioti: Barwar Close.
