Goannas secure 21 point win round 15

It was back to Gipps for the Goannas, with the Div 1 team looking to make it 6 wins in a row when they hosted Illawarra.

In windy conditions the Goannas had the better of a tough first quarter, edging ahead by 3 points at the first change.

The second quarter saw the Goannas dominating the play, however they were wasteful in front of goal, and with Illawarra making the most of their chances the margin was only 9 points and the game still in the balance.

The Goannas came out strongly in the third, once again being the dominant team, however every time they threatened to break away the Lions came back, and managed to be within 12 points at the last change.

The last saw the Goannas once again dominate play but waste their chances in front of goal, but in the end they did enough to come away with a 21 point win to all but secure a finals berth.

Angus Barwick was the best on ground with a great effort from half back, with Andrew Munns and John Maniscalco providing great support in the backline. Brodie Crane, Shane Williams and Taigen Dubbelde were excellent through the middle and up forward as well.

Div 4 were looking to return to the winners circle after back to back losses when they took on Moorebank. Kicking with the breeze in the first quarter, the Goannas made a perfect start, dominating play and kicking 5 goals to none in a fantastic display, opening up an early 32 point lead.

The second quarter was more of a scrap, with the strong breeze making it difficult to generate scoring opportunities, but excellent defence kept the Magpies goalless until the last few minutes when a couple of lapses allowed Moorebank to bring the margin back to 20 points.

A scrappy start to the third quarter saw Moorebank get the first goal, but the Goannas soon got the focus back and 4 goals to finish the quarter saw the home team in control with a 40 point lead.

The Goannas lifted even more in the last, keeping Moorebank scoreless despite the visitors having the advantage of the breeze, and extended the margin to 52 points by the final siren.

Adam Byrne was best on ground with plenty of ball through the middle and 3 goals, with Chris Jones also providing spark through the middle and up forward.

Div 5 were also taking on Moorebank, and after knocking off the Magpies earlier in the season they were looking to repeat the dose at home. A see-sawing first quarter saw the Goannas edge ahead, making the most of their opportunities to have a narrow 2 point lead at quarter time.

The Magpies had the wind advantage in the second quarter and peppered the goals, and while their inaccuracy saw a number of opportunities lost they still took a 30 point lead into the long break.

The Goannas were confident of bringing the margin back when they had the wind in the third term, but a determined Moorebank defended very well and kept the Goannas to one goal, while extending the margin to 39 at three quarter time.

A strong finish from the Goannas saw them have the better of the last term kicking in to the breeze, but it was not enough to stop Moorebank securing a 38 point win. Lee Nolan was best on ground with plenty of run off half back, while Keiran Mergan had a fantastic debut for the club.

Adrian Freund, Matt Smith, Harlan Surrao and Jacob Van Groesen were all excellent on a tough day for the team.

The Under 19’s were searching for their first win when they too hosted Moorebank to kick off the action for the day at Gipps.

Unfortunately it was the visitors who had the better start, kicking 6 goals to none to take control of the game from the very beginning.

The Goannas fought valiantly but could not make any dents in the momentum of the Magpies, though did finish strong in the last quarter to match with the visitors but the damage was done. Sam Bridie continued his good form with a best on ground performance, while Jake Stiles, Darcy Jenson, Jake Nolan, Steve Smith and Justin Taylor were also standout performers on a tough day.
