Junior bowlers from Merrylands and Carlingford claimed a top gong at the 2014 Junior State Lawn Bowling championships on Friday.
Mason Lewis of Merrylands Club Bowling and Sam Hatch-Caccamo of Carlingford Bowling Club teamed up to win the state junior pairs event over the three-day tournament at Warilla Bowls & Recreation Club Shellharbour.
Lewis, 17, who has bowled alongside Hatch-Caccamo at the state championships for several years running, said it was a ‘‘relief’’ to win the state junior pairs event against skilled opponents Jayden Gebbie and Dylan Skinner after coming up short in previous years.
‘‘We played the top 16 zones in NSW and we came out on top,’’ Lewis said. ‘‘They played well. It wasn’t an easy game, it was a fight until the end.’’
Lewis said he and Hatch-Caccamo, both avid bowlers from a young age, met about four years ago at Rydalmere Bowling Club and became good friends.
Merrylands bowler Zeljko Trbara, 26, described Lewis as a ‘‘consistent on the bowling green’’.
‘‘He’s definitely got a very, very big future ahead of him, he’s got great promise.’’
Lewis will next compete alongside his teammates in the Merrylands grade 1 men’s pennants side at the NSW Men’s Open in August.
