THE National Desexing Network has enlisted the services of a number of vets in south-west Sydney to encourage pet owners to desex their pets before the spring breeding season.
For the month of July many veterinary practices around the area, including the Animal Welfare League NSW, have joined the program and discounted their desexing charges.
Director of the National Desexing Network, Carol Mihaka, said that each year tens of thousands of cats and dogs and their litters were collected as strays or handed in to pounds and shelters.
"This fact sadly results in death for a majority of these animals," she said.
"We hope the nation will take advantage of these discounted prices over the month of July, which will inevitably relieve the burden of having to find homes for unplanned litters next breeding season."
The Animal Welfare League is taking part in the initiative to help prevent unwanted litters of puppies and kittens being dumped at pounds and shelters.
Dr Laura Brown said the Kemps Creek Veterinary hospital was offering discount desexing for financially disadvantaged members of the community.
"Cats are able to get pregnant when they are as young as four months old," she said.
"To prevent accidental or early litters, kittens can be safely desexed at our clinic from three months of age."
She said that apart from reducing pet over-population, there were many health, cost and behavioural benefits with desexing pets.
This can include reduced cancer risk and less expense in caring for unwanted animals.
