TAB expects punters to back Chris Waller

The NSW TAB is expecting punters to back champion Sydney trainer Chris Waller to win at least five races at Rosehill Gardens tomorrow as interest builds over whether he can break more records.

After early scratchings, the Waller stable now has more than 30 per cent of the day’s runners on his home track at Rosehill Gardens – with runners in every race, including four in the day’s main event, the Winter Cup over 2400m, and six of the ten runners in the Natski Hcp over 1500m., on its racing extras page, has opened a market on how many winners Waller will train and the opening favourite was installed as three winners, at odds of $3.20.

But the TAB’s Glenn Munsie said he was expecting punters to start to take the $4 on offer for Waller to train at least five winners, especially once final scratchings were taken tomorrow morning and tipsters began to hone in on Waller’s best chances.

“The $4 will start to look very inviting if he maintains all of his runners in each of the eight races tomorrow,’’ Munsie said.

“If some of the top tipsters such as Ron Dufficy, Michael Fraser and Tony Brassel start to tip a hatful of Waller winners I am sure the punters could make the five or more option the favourite.’’

The legendary TJ Smith holds the modern record for the most number of winners at a Sydney Saturday meeting, when he trained six winners at Royal Randwick in 1972, and Warwick Farm in 1978.

Just four Saturdays ago, Waller led home five winners at his home track at Rosehill Gardens, and he has trained a total of 18 winners over the past five Sydney Saturday meetings.

Waller is also striving to break his own record for the most number of metropolitan winners in a season, and sits on 141.5 winners, chasing last year’s total of 167.5.

The Australian Turf Club will continue its winter racing specials at the track tomorrow, including $5 tap beers in designated Members and general admission areas, extra winter buffets, family tours behind the scenes on a race day including getting up close to thoroughbreds, and free tipping competitions.
