AUSTRALIA'S oldest person, Jane Gray, died at the age of 112 at her nursing home in Smithfield over the weekend.

Born on December 1, 1901, one day before King Camp Gillette invented the safety razor, the mother of two, grandmother of seven, great-grandmother of eight and great-great-grandmother of two died in her sleep at SummitCare Smithfield.

Born in Scotland, Mrs Gray and her husband migrated to Australia in 1927; she lived in their Smithfield home for more than 83 years.

Mrs Gray said the secret to longevity was clean living, making the most of every day, and being part of a community.
