GALLERY: Granville pupil steps into principal’s shoes

Playground greetings became more formal for Maryan Qazzaz who stepped into her principal’s shoes today.

The year 6 pupil at Granville East Public School swapped lessons for the chance to shadow the school’s principal Louise Reynolds under the national Principal  for a Day program to instil leadership skills in students.

At morning assembly ‘‘Miss Qazzaz’’ told the whole school she was excited to take on the role.

‘‘I know some of you may think I’m lucky because I don’t have to do maths or writing [today], but in my opinion I’m lucky  because I get to learn what a leader is and I get to step into Miss Reynolds’ shoes — though not literally.

‘‘When I grow up I want to be a civil engineer and to be a good engineer I’ll need to lead people properly.

‘‘I’m expecting it to be fun and helpful for everyday life and I hope I get to learn a few tips.’’

Miss Reynolds said for fairness, Maryan’s name was drawn out of a hat with those of the school captains, vice-captains and prefects.

She began her principal’s duties at 8.30am.

‘‘We had a check-in meeting with a teacher about their professional learning plan, and a teacher come and ask Miss Qazzaz  [about] an appropriate amount to cover costs to go to the athletics carnival if buses cost $1777 and we’ve got 360 kids. We had to figure that out at $6 a head.

‘‘It’s very important Maryan is in the staff room for recess and is with the staff and teachers because that is when  they’ll ask questions.’’

Classroom visits, notifications about the new school app, and an executive meeting with the school’s three assistant principals were also on the day’s agenda.

‘‘In an incredibly complex job, whether it’s staff or student inquiries or answering phone inquiries, who knows what will emerge,’’ Miss Reynolds said.

‘‘We left ourselves some time to be responsive.

‘‘I think it’s a wonderful opportunity. Not only does it build the profile of school leadership in general, it’s an opportunity for a two-way dialogue.

‘‘I’m hoping that by Maryan shadowing me for the day she can really learn about the role and how complex it is. At the same time I’ve got this student voice that I can tap into.’’
