NRL seeks please explain from clubs

NRL clubs will be asked to explain the miraculous recoveries of the 29 players ruled out of representative teams last week, only to be named for their clubs on Tuesday night.

Fairfax Media understands the NRL is frustrated over the club's treatment of the representative round, with the legitimacy of the matches high on the agenda for Wednesday's chief executives meeting.

It appears that a miracle cure is doing the rounds in the NRL with an incredible 29 of the 31 players that were either made unavailable or withdrew from the representative matches named to return this weekend.

The two exceptions were were Cronulla's Todd Carney and Penrith's Elijah Taylor.

Carney has a hamstring injury that saw him taken from the field against the Panthers in round eight, and isn't expected to return until round 11, with Luke Lewis coming into the side at five-eighth for his first game of the season.

Taylor suffered a knee injury in the same match, and isn't expected back until round 14.

Parramatta has been one of the most criticised teams for players pulling out of representative football, with Jarryd Hayne (shoulder), Tim Mannah (eardrum), Nathan Peats (ankle) and Manu Ma'u all named in Brad Arthur's team to take on Cronulla at Pirtek Stadium on Monday night.

Hayne was ruled out of last Friday's Test through injury, while Ma'u wasn't named to make his debut for New Zealand after the Eels informed coach Stephen Kearney that he would be unavailable for selection due to injury.

Peats and Mannah were both unavailable for Brad Fittler's City Origin team for last Sunday's clash in Dubbo.

Dragons trio Josh Dugan, Tyson Frizell and Trent Merrin were all late omissions from Trent Barrett's Country Origin team, however have all been named in St George Illawarra's line-up to take on the Bulldogs on Sunday.

The club said the trio "will be monitored throughout the week by Dragons medical staff before a decision is made on their availability".

Storm winger Sisa Waqa was unable to line up for Fiji against Samoa in Penrith on Saturday night because he was due to undergo ankle surgery.

However, Waqa was named in the Melbourne team to take on Manly on Saturday night, with the club explaining his shock selection on its website.

"After originally being earmarked for minor ankle surgery after the match against the Warriors, it was decided following further consultation and review with the surgeon that surgery was not required until the end of the season," it said.

"Waqa has responded extremely well to treatment during the representative bye weekend and has been able to train successfully. He will continue to manage treatment for the rest of the season."

Warriors prop Ben Matulino, who missed the club's last two games through suspension, was also made unavailable for the Kiwis through injury but has been named to play against Canberra at Eden Park on Saturday afternoon.

Tigers halfback Luke Brooks and Souths winger Alex Johnston were both withdrawn from the NSW Origin under-20s team, with Tigers coach Mick Potter this week saying, “In my humble opinion, I think Luke has progressed a little bit further than the under 20s NSW team.

“Luke has played every single game in NRL [this season], he’s played all the NRL trials. Having Robbie [Farah] and James Tedesco out, it just made sense to not have him play in that game where he didn’t need to play.”
