Merrylands’ Samuels to stay with Flames

Award-winning basketballer Casey Samuels has re-signed with the Sydney Uni Flames for a further two years.

The Merrylands resident and last season’s most valuable player award-winner said she was ‘‘excited’’ to re-sign with the club.

‘‘I am really looking forward to be playing with the Brydens Sydney Uni Flames for another two seasons,’’ Samuels said.

‘‘I thoroughly enjoyed playing here last season, so to be involved with this program and Karen [Dalton] again is just great.

‘‘I look forward to my game developing further and I’m hopeful that we are going to have a successful season.’’

She joins former Women’s National Basketball League most valuable player and Australian Opals player Rohanee Cox and Tahlia Tupaea along with basketball veteran Lauren King in committing their future to the club.

Last season Samuels played 24 games for the club — many of them in a starting spot.

She averaged 6.4 points, 1.7 rebounds and 0.8 assists per game.

Flames head coach Karen Dalton said she was glad Samuels signed the two-year contract.

‘‘Casey is one of the up and coming players of the WNBL and she made great inroads last season,’’ Ms Dalton said.

‘‘Casey is a great athlete and I am really looking forward to working with her over the next couple of years.

‘‘It’s also great that we have re-signed another local Sydney junior.’’
