Retired priest faces child sex charges

A retired former western Sydney priest has appeared in court charged with sexually assaulting a young boy.

The 73-year-old briefly appeared at Tweed Heads local court on Monday charged over assaults which allegedly occurred between 1984 and 1991 while he was working at a church in St Marys.

He was charged late last month after a two-year investigation, launched in 2012 when the complainant contacted police.

The accused did not enter a plea and was granted conditional bail. He is due to reappear at Lismore Local Court on May 20.

It is understood that he worked as a priest in Sydney from 1964 to 1994.
