Meridian a ship well steered

For more than 30 years, Elias Savvides has captained Meridian Seafoods.

The business started off with a small store in Leichhardt offering fresh fish, some of which was personally sourced by Mr Savvides from New Zealand and Thailand.

"I have been in the seafood business since 1974, and I believe with good quality and good service a ship is well steered," he said.

"Meridian has thrived despite many changes brought about by the global economy, and we have always retained a family feel and the same dedication to excellence."

Mr Savvides said his wonderful staff and customers have been with Meridian for decades.

"It is our personal touch that keeps them loyal, and well-fed," he said.

"Even our chief accountant, George wants to be known as the kitchen hand because he, like everyone here, loves good food."

Every well-run ship needs a loyal second in command, and Mr Savvides' son Con has helped bring the business into the global market.

"He is now responsible for importing and he personally visits the factories overseas to supervise packaging and ensure quality control with our own brand, Mermaid's Choice," Mr Savvides said. "Many things have changed at Meridian, but our determination to do business with the best producers of seafood all over the world has not. Everyone who visits the store finds a community that has stood together, a warm family welcome and excellent value."
