GREATER Western Sydney Giants have finally beaten the Sydney Swans — for their fourth win after two and a bit seasons in the AFL premiership.
The western suburbs boys kicked 15.9 (99) to 9.13 (67). Down by three points at three quarter time, the Giants kicked six unanswered goals in the final quarter.
In round two, the Giants will play St Kilda at Etihad Stadium on Saturday, March 29, at 1.40pm and their next home game is round three against Melbourne at Spotless Stadium on Sunday, April 6, at 1.10pm.
The second quarter of Saturday's "battle of the bridge" was delayed by 25 minutes after storms and heavy rain struck the ground.
The crowd braved the elements to see the Giants win.
Giants chairman Tony Shepherd was thrilled: "It was also a special moment for the fans who have stuck with us over the past two years, we always said this was going to be a journey and there is still a long way to go for our young side."
