Major league baseball players visit Fairfield

FAIRFIELD was the first stop on baseball's tour Down Under on Monday.

Westfields Sports High School hosted the Major League Baseball Players Alumni Association Legends for Youth baseball clinic series.

One hundred children from across south-west Sydney took part in the clinics which featured former MLB players Rene Gonzales and Todd Haney and members from Team Australia.

Craig Shipley, the first Australian-born player in recent years to compete in the major leagues — he's an Arizona Diamondbacks staff member — was on hand to demonstrate his skills and encourage the children.

The Los Angeles Dodgers and Arizona Diamondbacks open the Major League Baseball season on Saturday at the SCG.
