Mount Pritchard resident wins Woman of the Year award

MOUNT Pritchard resident Faten El Dana has won the 2014 Women of the Year People's Choice Community Hero award.

She was recognised for her commitment to improving the lives of migrant women.

"It was a big surprise, especially because the judging was based on the community voting," she said.

"I feel humble to know that a large number of the community support me."

Mrs El Dana is the president of Muslim Women's Welfare of Australia and volunteers in her spare time to organise and implement community projects that target women's needs.

"For 20 years I have had this strong connection with the community," she said.

"I've successfully established an open channel with my community members, especially women.

"I've listened to them and tried to understand their needs and address their pressing issues."

The winners of the 2014 NSW Women of the Year Awards were announced during a special reception at NSW Parliament House last Friday.

■ The Premier's Award for Woman of the Year winner was Turia Pitt from Narrawalle.

■ Holsworthy resident Lakshmi Logathassan won the 2014 Harvey Norman's Young Women of the Year Award.
