Design takes shape for major redevelopment of Westmead Hospital

Health Minister Jillian Skinner today welcomed the appointment of the lead design team to start planning stage 1 of a major redevelopment of Westmead Hospital.

Health Infrastructure announced the team comprises: Johnstaff (project manager), Medical Architecture (master planning) and Altus Page Kirkland (cost manager).

Late last year the NSW government announced $1 million to begin planning the first stage of the redevelopment, which would house all complex and critical care services in one multi-storey comprehensive care centre to improve the treatment of critically-ill emergency patients, trauma and surgical patients.

“I was proud to officially open the $5 million upgrade to the emergency department at Westmead Hospital last year,” Mrs Skinner said.

“And just last month I was delighted to return to congratulate Westmead Hospital staff on achieving almost a 30 per cent improvement in the rate of people leaving the emergency department within four hours.

‘‘That was up from almost 44 per cent at the beginning of 2013 to 74 per cent at the end of 2013.

“Clearly, the Westmead staff are great at what they do.

‘‘Indeed, the name Westmead Hospital is synonymous with outstanding clinical care.

‘‘But, after years of neglect by the former Labor government, there is no doubt it needs an overhaul.

“The NSW Liberal and Nationals government is getting on with the job of rebuilding hospitals like Westmead — and planning for stage 1 is just the start,” Mrs Skinner said.

Member for Parramatta Dr Geoff Lee said: “The good news just keeps coming for Westmead.

‘‘This outstanding hospital will only get better as we deliver the state-of-the-art infrastructure the patients and staff want and deserve.”

Member for Granville Tony Issa said: “Westmead Hospital plays a vital role in the life of western Sydney.

‘‘I share the excitement about the planned major redevelopment, which will serve our community’s health needs, now and well into the future.”

Stage 1 planning will involve consultation with staff, clinicians and management to identify the key clinical priorities.

Planning should be finalised by the end of the year.
