Tennis futures start with small steps

STEWART Whicker is spreading the tennis gospel in Fairfield district primary schools.

The Marconi Tennis Academy coach has been a long-time advocate of getting kids into tennis.

He wants to see tennis played in all local primary schools as part of their health and fitness programs.

The MLC Hot Shots program, aimed at nine and 10 year-olds, is run by Tennis Australia teaching the basic skills to boys and girls.

"Hot Shots is played on a smaller court with a lighter tennis ball and kids learn to start rallying and playing shots," Whicker said.

He began this year's program last week at Fairvale Primary School and Bossley Park Primary School.

"We want to expand Hot Shots throughout as many primary schools as we can in the Fairfield district," Whicker said.

He said all participants receive a free Tennis Australia T-shirt.

Joel Liberatore, one of Whicker's junior tennis coaches, conducted the program at Fairvale on Tuesday and he was one of five coaches at Bossley Park Primary School on Friday.

Marconi Tennis Academy is certified by Tennis Australia for the MLC Hot Shots program.
