Man charged after 'marrying' girl, 12

A man has been charged following investigations into alleged sexual offences committed on a girl in Guildford and Newcastle last year.

Detectives attached to the State Crime Command’s Child Abuse Squad commenced investigations into an alleged underage relationship between a man and a young girl.

Police will allege the 26-year-old man met the 12-year-old girl at Wallsend in 2013 and became involved in an on-going sexual relationship with her.

The pair then allegedly moved to a house in Guildford where they continued the relationship.

Yesterday, the 26-year-old man was arrested by detectives from the Child Abuse Squad and taken to Auburn Police Station.

He was charged with 25 counts of sexual intercourse with a child between 10 and 14 years and refused bail to appear in Burwood Local Court on Friday.

Police will allege that the man and child were ‘married’ in a religious ceremony in NSW earlier this year.

Investigations by the State Crime Command’s Child Abuse Squad are continuing.
