Right moves earn dancer top 100 spot

BALLROOM dancer Kathaleen Fisher has reached the top 100 of So You Think You Can Dance Australia.

The Bossley Park dancer, 19, said being on the show had been a once in a lifetime experience.

"I have always wanted to audition for the show, it is something I have been watching since I was young and I told myself that when I was 18 I would," Miss Fisher said.

"But then the show went away. When it came back, I got so excited and put my name straight down for it.

"It has been a very long process that started with online auditions, then you have to go dance for them. The top 100 is picked after that.

She said the online audition video was especially hard.

"It had to be solo and I am a ballroom dancer," she said. "I had to make up a whole new dance just for myself."

Miss Fisher said even though the show pushed her to her limits, she loved every second of it.

"It was so different to everyday life, it felt like I was in fantasy land," she said.

"I have always enjoyed the TV aspect of it and it was funny to see how it all works.

"The other contestants were all amazing dancers, every single one of those dancers inspired me so much.

"They were unique and all there for the same reason — for the love of dance — and it was great to be surrounded by that."

Miss Fisher said she began dancing when she was three.

She attended classes at Glenda Yee dance studio in Prestons and DanceXS in Wetherill Park.

"I was the typical child enrolled in dance school to do ballet and jazz," she said.

"Then I started ballroom when I was five. My uncle did ballroom dancing and that is how I got into it.

"I excelled more in ballroom than in jazz so I decided to pay more attention to that.

"I love the ballroom life more than the jazz life, jazz is competitive but then ballroom is so like everyone wants to kill each other.

"Right now my career path is just to dance."

So You Think You Can Dance Australia starts on Channel Ten this Sunday, February 9, at 6.30pm.
