FORMER Olympian and Australian basketball player Shane Heal has been named this year's Fairfield City Council Australia Day ambassador.
The current head coach of the Sydney Kings represented Australia at four Olympic Games and played professionally for more than 20 years in Australia, Europe and America.
Mr Heal was also the captain of the Sydney Kings when the team won its first title.
A Fairfield Council spokesman said after Mr Heal's retirement, he earned a reputation as a successful entrepreneur and businessman, while also showcasing his leadership through coaching.
"Shane's high standard of excellence, hard work and passion allowed him to succeed in a sport often reserved for taller athletes," he said.
"His leadership, charisma and communications skills have translated off the court in business and coaching."
The Fairfield City Australia Day Community Awards Ceremony will be held on January 23 at a private function.
The ceremony will include a presentation of the 2014 Fairfield City Australia Day Community Awards. Fairfield mayor Frank Carbone will present the 2014 Fairfield City Citizen, Young Citizen, Sports Achiever and Volunteer of the Year, along with recipients of Australia Day medallions and certificates.
The council will also host a citizenship ceremony to officially welcome new citizens as full members of the Australian community.
