Pantomime full of laughs

ST Johns Park resident Melissa Houghton will get her big break in theatre this weekend.

She will serve as director for the Holroyd Musical and Dramatic Society's latest pantomime Dick Whittington and the Panto Pop Idol, described as an interactive play for the whole family to enjoy.

"It's a comedy with lots of original music," she said. "Santa will also be there for the kids."

Miss Houghton composed, arranged and prepared the production's music.

The play follows the story of Dick Whittington and his cat.

On their travels, the pair come across The Bow Bells, who are entering a pop idol competition. Dick is offered the job of serving as the group's manager.

Miss Houghton chose the English folk tale as a base because she lived in London for five years and found that musicals were popular.

"I knew it would be popular over here as well because of all the pop idol shows on TV," she said. "And I found it easy to direct the play.

"I studied theatre at university and I am a drama teacher for high school students.

"Rehearsal was fun. Everyone is always laughing."

The show will be performed at the St Stephen's Church Hall at Merrylands.

Show times: Friday, December 6, at 7.30pm; December 7, 2pm and 7.30pm; Friday, December 13 at 7.30pm; and December 14 at 2pm and 7.30pm.

Tickets cost $10 at the door.
