WHILE Prime Minister Kevin Rudd and Opposition leader Tony Abbott were grabbing the headlines for their recent debating tussles, Canley Vale High School's team of talkers were preparing for a battle of their own against local rivals, Prairiewood High School.
Canley Vale's team of Year 9 students Florence Fung, Leslie Diep, Nita So and Cindy Nguyen-Tran recently travelled to Prairiewood High School to compete in the fifth round of the Regional Junior Premier's Debating Competition.
The debated topic was: "whistleblowers should be protected from prosecution".
Canley Vale High School was assigned the negative.
Both teams only had just one hour to prepare before presenting their arguments in front of a student audience.
Nita So said she feared the Canley Vale team's points were a little weak.
After an intense 50 minutes of both teams arguing their case, the adjudicator found in favour of the affirmative.
"The Prairiewood High School debating team were really good," said Canley Vale's Florence Fung. "They basically smashed us during the debate, although it was a good experience."
