CALL it luck or sheer co-incidence but it was an uncanny year for the maternity ward in Fairfield Hospital.
There were 2012 babies delivered at the hospital in 2012.
Midwifery unit manager Catherine Niec said the number was a significant increase from previous years. "It was a really busy year for us," she said.
"But it's really a privilege to be part of a family's special experience of bringing a baby into the world. I'm just really looking forward to the year ahead."
The director of Women's Health for South Western Sydney Local Health District, Associate Professor Gamal Matthias, said that 1830 babies were born in 2011.
According to the ancient Chinese zodiac calendar, 2012 was the Year of the Dragon, which is believed to deliver good fortune. The last Year of the Dragon — which was the year 2000 — was when the hospital celebrated more than 2000 births.
