Parramatta Sydney Festival closes roads

Parramatta’s CBD will be transformed into a moving festival this week and people have been warned to plan ahead as ‘‘extensive’’ road closures are enforced.

Police have also warned they will be out in force targeting alcohol-related violence and anti-social behaviour.

Parramatta police commander Robert Redfern said tens of thousands of people were expected to descend on the CBD for the Opening Party on Saturday.

‘‘This is the second year for the Parramatta Opening Party, and it will again bring Parramatta to life as part of this year’s Sydney Festival,’’ he said.

‘‘Operation Taylor will be conducted by police who will be patrolling in and around the Parramatta CBD to ensure this is a safe and enjoyable event for all attending.’’

‘‘Sydney Festival is one of the highlights of summer in Sydney and we will ensure the Parramatta Opening Party is not ruined by alcohol-related violence.

‘‘Officers will also focus on anti-social and criminal behaviour in and around the event precinct, ensuring a safe and secure environment.’’

Superintendent Redfern encouraged people to leave their cars at home and take public transport, walk or ride to the festival events.
