Property offences targeted

EXTRA police patrols will be conducted in Bonnyrigg, Edensor Park, Fairfield, Smithfield and Wetherill Park to combat an increasing number of break and enters and property crime.

Fairfield police will target business and industrial areas.

Fairfield local area command crime prevention officer Constable Ece Hasan said most of the property-related crime was occurring during working hours.

"When there is an increase in crime it may result from crooks moving into the area, or it could be totally opportunistic where residents are not complying with crime prevention strategies or they are being careless in locking doors and windows or not enabling the alarm system," she said.

Constable Hasan urges residents to take simple precautions to help reduce property crime.

This includes ensuring doors and windows are locked.

She advises residents to have personal items engraved as it would make them harder to sell.

"Also keep trees and shrubs around your home well trimmed to increase your natural surveillance and don't leave items around your yard that can be used to assist burglars to break in," she said.

"If you see or hear something that does not seem right, contact police."
