THE Cabramatta Two Blues are quickly getting a reputation as being the Bundaberg Red cup mud runners following their 24-12 victory over the WA Reds in Rockingham on Saturday night.
On a wet and windy night in Western Australia, Cabramatta flexed their premiership muscle against the cellar dwellers, scoring five tries to two in a controlled display in the west.
``It was a hard and tough game. Despite their position on the ladder, WA are a tough team and their losses have been mostly close,'' Two Blues coach Len Stacker said.
``We are pretty used to playing wet weather footy now so that doesn't pose a big challenge anymore as we like to grind out teams.''
Coming off a week when Reds coach Chris Dever stood down in the wake of their winless start to 2009, the Two Blues were expecting a more committed and determined outfit and that's exactly what they got.
An intercept try to the home team on the halftime siren reduced the Two Blues lead to six and conjured up dreams of a famous first victory. However, a try immediately after the break ensured Cabramatta secured their eighth win of the season.
``I just told the guys to keep playing to our strengths and I thought we could win,'' Stacker said.
``Even without five regulars, James Trotter, Sam Aiga and Ben Ellis stood up and we managed to get the two points to keep us at the top of the ladder.''
Cabramatta sit in first place on 18 points, equal with the Windsor Wolves who have a game in hand. Mounties are in seventh place on 13 points and also have a game in hand as a result of the weekend's clash with the Bankstown City Bulls being cancelled.
This week: Two Blues vs Rebels, Saturday, New Era Stadium, 5.30pm.
Mounties vs Windsor Wolves, Saturday, Windsor Sports Complex, 3pm.
