Two Blues cop boot's sting

08 Jul, 2009 03:49 PM
IN WHAT many believe was a grand final preview, Cabramatta have surrendered top place on the Bundaberg Red Cup ladder with a 22-20 away defeat at the hands of the Wentworthville Magpies.

In arguably the game of the season, the top of the table clash lived up to expectations, with both teams scoring four tries apiece. with goal-kicking the only difference.

``It was a very high-quality game. It was played with semi-final intensity and there were some great tries scored,'' Cabramatta coach Len Stacker said.

``I am not disappointed with our performance. We were just missed a few crucial chances and in this competition you have to take them to win.''

Trailing 12-8 at the break, the Two Blues took the lead early in the second half and missed a golden chance to increase the lead when penalty goal sailed wide from in front. It ended up being an eight-point turnaround when the Magpies marched down field in the next set to take back the lead and secure the valuable two competition points.

``It was the turning point of the match. We played some good footy with James and Trent Trotter on one side and Ben Ellis and Sammy Aiga combining well on the other, but we just came up short,'' Stacker said.

``I guess the good thing about playing tough games is that the boys are getting a taste of what is to come in the finals. This week against Windsor is another tough game and we will be have to be at our best to beat them.''

With only three rounds remaining, Cabramatta now sit in second place on the ladder on 20 points, one point behind Wentworthville and three points ahead of local rivals Mounties who re-entered the top-five with a comprehensive 40-22 victory over the WA Reds.

With a game still in hand, Mounties are well placed to make a charge to the finals, with their fate to be decided with two games against the fourth-placed Bankstown Bulls in coming weeks.

This week: Two Blues v Windsor, Windsor Sports Complex, Saturday, 6pm.

Mounties v Rhinos, Terry Lamb Sports Complex, Friday, 7.30pm.
