Ellis shows why he's got the guernsey

CABRAMATTA lock forward Ben Ellis has celebrated his selection in the NSW Residents team with a commanding performance in the Two Blues last-ditch Bundaberg Cup win against the Windsor Wolves 32-29 on Saturday night.

With half of the club's salary cap sitting in the stands, Ellis and fellow workhorse Jamie Small were inspirational in getting the Two Blues the valuable two points and in the process catapulting them back to the top of the Bundaberg Red cup ladder.

The Blues, who scored seven tries to five but managed to kick only two goals, looked as though they had let another match slip through their grasp as the Wolves snatched the lead with a field goal five minutes from time.

However, powerful back rower Ross Brown snatched the lead and victory back with 15 seconds remaining on the clock when he crashed over for his second try of the night.

It was the icing on the cake for former St George Illawarra player Ellis, who was the only Bundy Red cup player to make the Combined NSW Residents team that will play the Queensland Residents prior to next Wednesday's third a State of Origin at Suncorp Stadium.

The residents's team is primarily composed of NSW Cup players.

``I was over the moon when I found out I had made the team. It is going to be awesome to play at Suncorp they are pretty hostile to anyone in a blue jumper, but I am looking forward to it,'' Ellis said.

``I have to say a big thank you to my team because we are playing some good footy which has enabled me to relax and play my game. Hopefully I can do the same on Wednesday night and you never know what might happen.''

Across town, Mounties maintained their push for a spot in the finals with a hard fought 26-20 win over the Chester Hill Rhinos at Terry Lamb Sports Complex.

Mounties' third win in a row keeps them in fifth position on the ladder with two rounds (plus a make-up) game to go.

Their next game is on Sunday, July 26 against the fourth placed Bankstown City Bulls at Mt Pritchard Sports Ground at 3pm.
