SYDNEY United will take on former NSL rivals Melbourne Knights on Saturday in the most eagerly awaited pre-season match of the year. The Knights will make the trip to Sydney United Sports Centre for the inaugural Friendship Cup ahead of both clubs' respective Victorian and NSW Premier League seasons. New United player/coach David Zdrilic said his side was looking forward to the challenge of coming up against the Croatian-backed Knights.
``It's going to be a special occasion because there is a lot of tradition between the two clubs,'' he said.
``We want to try to do this every year because it's good for the community and both clubs so, hopefully, a big crowd comes out to see us.''
The departure of United's Ante Milicic to new A-League franchise Melbourne Heart has opened the door for Zdrilic to lead United to the elusive premiership.
But Zdrilic isn't the only change to the 2009 minor premiers, with Shane Lyons (APIA), Peter Zorbas (Sydney Olympic), Michael Cindric (Olympic) and Sean Mitchell (Marconi) joining the club for the 2010 season which starts on February 28.
``The pre-season is going all right at the moment. We beat Bankstown 2-1 last week.''
There will be a jumping castle, half-time entertainment, raffle and a chance for fans to meet the players. Kick-off at 7.30pm.
