IF YOU asked Alex Brosque last week where he would be during next year's World Cup, he would have probably said in his lounge room.
The former Westfields Sports and Marconi footballer told the Champion South Africa was the last thing on his mind - at least before he was called into the Socceroos squad last Monday.
''Going into last week it was the furthest thing from my mind,'' he said.
''But I guess now there's some hope leading into this World Cup rather than concentrating on 2014.''
The Sydney FC striker joined the Socceroos squad in Oman after Josh Kennedy was ruled out of the Asian Cup qualifier through injury.
Despite watching his side's 2-1 victory from the stands, a renewed Brosque, 26, said the experience had changed his mindset.
Brosque, who roomed with Jason Culina in Oman, said he had a series of conversations with national coach Pim Verbeek during his time in Muscat.
''We had a chat and he said he's reasonably happy with how I've been going [for Sydney FC],'' Brosque said.
''He doesn't come out to every game but he told me he's got people who are watching.
''It's good to know where you stand when it comes to having a chance at playing.''
The Socceroos will be forced to play their next Asian Cup qualifier without their European-based players but Alex Brosque doesn't consider himself an automatic inclusion.
''Guys like Mile Sterjovski and Archie Thompson are good players,'' he said.
''Just because I was in the recent squad doesn't give me the right to start.''
Brosque said the thought of a possible World Cup appearance wouldn't see a change in the way he has been playing with the sky blue.
''I was called into the team because of what I've been doing so far,'' he said.
''So changing that wouldn't be right.''
