THE NBL's Sydney Spirit took time-out last Sunday to hold a training session with the Cabramatta Obilic basketball club juniors squad.
Spirit captain Liam Rush along with import stars David Gruber, Derrick Low and assistant coach Shawn Dennis spent three hours teaching the youngsters about the finer points of basketball at the Cabramatta-Fairfield PCYC. The juniors aged between six and 14 were shown how to perform a number of skills from perfecting their jumpshot to how to out-dribble a defensive player in tight situations.
Towards the end the future stars of tomorrow were divided into teams playing full scrimmages.
Obilic juniors manager Milan Vasiljevic, who initially approached Dennis earlier this season about the training session, was amazed at how much fun the juniors had.
``The juniors were in awe,'' Vasiljevic said. ``I've never seen so many happy faces before and they [juniors] kept wanting for more.
Rush congratulated the club on its coaching style and success in paving the way for the juniors representative career at Bankstown.
The Obilic basketball club is organising this year's Draza Mihailovic Cup, an annual Serbian-Australian tournament with teams throughout the nation to compete. It's on December 24 and 26.
