What an idea - a Fairfield Council clock-o-meter

03 Jul, 2009 04:41 PM
Outspoken Cabramatta resident Charles Gream has come up with an original idea to keep tabs on Fairfield Council -a clock-o-meter.

The clock counts down the time councillors have left to serve out their term as well as the time that they've been in the job. And it's surrounded by notes drawing attention to the council's jobs in progress.

Although the clock in the picture on the right of this screen doesn't count down the time, it does in real life.

Mr Gream said the clock-o-meter ``arose from the frustration of observing poor council performance''.

``I feel council has been acting in way that is damaging to our way of life here in Australia,'' he said.

``The clock is fully automated in the sense that the days will be automatically updated as will be the clock face.

``From time to time other matters of interest might be added to the graphics.''

WHAT DO YOU THINK OF MR GREAM'S COUNCIL CLOCK-O-METER? DO YOU HAVE IDEAS ABOUT OTHER WAYS TO KEEP TABS ON THE COUNCIL?

Mr Gream said that in his dealings with council, he has ``grown weary'' of the following:

* The expression ``council is aware of the problem'' which constantly appears when an ongoing matter of concern is made known to the public;

* Council's insensitivity to the disruption to the community by not simply fixing a problem; and the waste of money that has, and is, occurring particularly in relation to rubbish collection and disposal.

* He said he has real concerns about a council when ``it has a chairperson who is willing to cast aspersions on a residents raising matters of concern and who states that if that person wants to throw rubbish

on the council he will get rubbish back'' and that uses the police to stop residents acting peacefully and lawfully from asking questions'';

* He said he also has concerns when a ``councillor...on two occasions recently stated that the media is the enemy of democracy because that person has no understanding of the role of the Press in the development and functioning of Western democracy''.

What about a huge clock on top of Fairfield Council Chambers so all people can tell the time in Fairfield without using a computer or mobile phone!

Will it clock their sleeping habits?

Charles should submit his idea to the next full Council meeting. Don't forget Charles- that it must be in writing before hand -as it won't be in the public interest.

A council consists basically of two elements. • Our administrators ought to fix things and not trot out platitudes like “council is aware of the problem”. The solution to a problem is simple: fix it. We need administrators who can do that. The problems we are seeing have been around for ages and the present administrators have had all those years to solve them. They haven’t done that. • Our elected council ought not to shoot the messengers as I have observed it to do. Shooting the messenger, attempting to discredit the media by monotonically stating that it is the enemy of democracy, removing a microphone from public access and then finally calling on the police to deal with citizens behaving in a law abiding way and wishing to put questions all adds up to one thing: an attack on democracy. Jane, in response to your comment, the clock is capable of recording and communicating anything that is observable and reportable; and thereby having the potential of effecting change by facilitating dissemination of information, for there must be change if our house, our home, this place in which we live is to be made better.

I would add to the above comment: I have observed these four councillors to act within the spirit of democracy, for they voted for the right of individuals to exercise free speech on that night when the police were called upon: Councillor Molluso Councillor Oliveri Councillor Rohan Councillor Toma

This is what the clock-o-meter looks like. But Mr Gream's version actually counts down the time.
