Times are tough for some Fairfield residents

04 Nov, 2009 01:35 PM
AFTER 18 months of searching and more than 1000 applications, Smithfield resident Mariama Bah finally started work this week.

She began an office-administration job on Monday and she could not be more excited.

``I decided to be positive and continue to keep on going, and thank God I did. I am so happy I am going to start a new job,'' the 21-year-old said.

Ms Bah migrated to Australia from Sierra Leone in 2006, completed her HSC and hoped to study business administration at university.

But she discovered she could not afford the fees.

``I don't have any experience in office administration but the company said they would train me, so I am very excited and nervous,'' she said.

Ms Bah's failure to find work had not been through lack of trying.

She speaks English well and has completed courses in beauty, responsible service of alcohol, gaming regulations and flight attending.

Ms Bah stayed positive and put her predicament down to bad luck and the economy.

``I thought, you have got to keep on going, the more you go, you will have to get [work] one day,'' she said. Ms Bah said she was grateful to be working and hoped she could still pursue a career as a flight attendant.

It's great to see that out of one person who has been looking for work over an 18mth period finally got a job. It saddens me to know it took this long for someone to find any work. A well educated lady, yet no one out there really has given her a chance sooner. It concernes me that their a hundreds of others still struggling to get work. Not only are we struggling with the business sector in our city but also in the surrounding suburbs. When is the Council going to help the city grow, with expansion for business? We lack businesses in the Fairfield District. This has been going on for too long. Noone wants to change and improve the city? Noone wants to take responsibility? Whats the Hold Up? What's it going to take? We have a high population in all of Fairfield, including the many other suburbs. Yet we lack business in this district. It would be good to see a business plan be created in this city.
