NEIGHBOURS of the Smithfield RSL Club have united to oppose the club's plans to extend its trading hours.
The new hours of operation would mean the club would be closed for only three hours, 6am to 9am, seven days a week.
The club presently closes at midnight on weekdays and 1am on weekends.
Smithfield resident Janette Kelly said ``enough is enough''.
``We already have to deal with constant noise from the poker machines, the speaker system and the air-conditioning but at least it stops around midnight,'' she said.
Mrs Kelly lives opposite the club, which is on the six-lane Cumberland Highway. But she said she can still hear the club's gaming room coin machines at night.
``Once the traffic stops on the highway, I hear constant noise particularly from the new outdoor gaming room and their ventilation system,'' she said.
Mrs Kelly said her neighbours were concerned about what the club might want next.
``If the extended trading hours are approved, where will it end?'' she said.
``We've already heard that there are plans for a motel to be built on the site.''
Fairfield Mayor Nick Lalich confirmed that a development application for a motel had been submitted by the club but no decision had yet been made.
He also stated that the council was still considering the club's application for extended trading hours of 9am to 6am.
Smithfield RSL Club's environmental consultant Carlo Ranieri said he was working on behalf of the club but would make sure that concerns were taken into consideration.
``The members of the community that have voiced their concerns are genuine and the club is trying their best to review policies and procedures to address them,'' he said.
Mr Ranieri said the noise complaints were being investigated with further noise studies in the area.
``The reports have all been filed with the council and the club will be moving towards coinless machines and will also continue to do further studies,'' he said.
``And due to the strong objection over trading hours the club has changed their application to trade 9am to 4am.''
Mr Ranieri said the club would continue to hold regular community meetings to deal with neighbouring residents' concerns.
