Cabramatta resident Charles Gream is continuing to place pressure on Fairfield Council to clean up its act - and the streets. Melanie Kembrey reports.
Last week, Mr Gream emailed councillors, asking them to reduce, prevent and clean up piles of dumped rubbish in residential streets.
Attached to the email were 24 photographs of rubbish piles in a dozen streets including Bowden, Vale, Polding and Douglas streets.
Mr Gream said the 10,000 instances of dumped rubbish last year supported his argument that a review of current waste management procedures was needed.
``Cabramatta has some gorgeous places, but when you walk through it you don't want to be exposed to the rubbish that is around and you certainly don'twant to smell it, Mr Gream said.
``The rubbish has been there for quite some time and the council has known and now need to do something about it,'' he said.
Councillor Lawrence White has responded to Mr Gream's email by saying he would refer the matter on to council officers.
Mr Gream, who is a former council employee, said he started to notice the increasing amount of dumping and littering in the area after he signed up to a power-walking health program.
``I started walking around and I just could not believe the amount of rubbish,'' he said.
``And some of the piles had been there for 12 months or so.''
Mr Gream said he would continue to lobby councillors to fix the problem.
``Failure to make changes now will only lead to increased waste on our streets,'' he said.
``I think the councillors are getting a bit concerned about me and I am very hopeful that they might do something about the rubbish.
``They don't realise that I will disappear from their lives once I have a decent environment here.
``Until then they are going to be stuck with me.''
