Pressure to clean up city continues

03 Feb, 2010 08:44 AM
Cabramatta resident Charles Gream is continuing to place pressure on Fairfield Council to clean up its act - and the streets. Melanie Kembrey reports.

Last week, Mr Gream emailed councillors, asking them to reduce, prevent and clean up piles of dumped rubbish in residential streets.

Attached to the email were 24 photographs of rubbish piles in a dozen streets including Bowden, Vale, Polding and Douglas streets.

Mr Gream said the 10,000 instances of dumped rubbish last year supported his argument that a review of current waste management procedures was needed.

``Cabramatta has some gorgeous places, but when you walk through it you don't want to be exposed to the rubbish that is around and you certainly don'twant to smell it, Mr Gream said.

``The rubbish has been there for quite some time and the council has known and now need to do something about it,'' he said.

Councillor Lawrence White has responded to Mr Gream's email by saying he would refer the matter on to council officers.

Mr Gream, who is a former council employee, said he started to notice the increasing amount of dumping and littering in the area after he signed up to a power-walking health program.

``I started walking around and I just could not believe the amount of rubbish,'' he said.

``And some of the piles had been there for 12 months or so.''

Mr Gream said he would continue to lobby councillors to fix the problem.

``Failure to make changes now will only lead to increased waste on our streets,'' he said.

``I think the councillors are getting a bit concerned about me and I am very hopeful that they might do something about the rubbish.

``They don't realise that I will disappear from their lives once I have a decent environment here.

``Until then they are going to be stuck with me.''

I congratulate Charles Gream for being a constant voice on this important issue. The matter is one that requires ongoing attention and vigilance. Messing about with public health is just too important to let slide. The current policies and systems clearly need some review. I would like to see Fairfield Council draft a new and serious waste management, dumping and rubbish control programme. This should be open to public scrutiny and done in conjunction with some genuine community consultation. There are bound to be plenty of people out there with sensible and innovative ideas that could perhaps address this issue, at all the levels required. The status quo is clearly failing, for whatever reason. In my opinion, the council would do well to pay attention to the things Mr Gream has had to say on the matter over the years. In the mean time the community needs to be constantly vigilant in demanding better standards, as community pressure is one of the best catalysts to get some change from our civic leaders as well as individuals who contribute to the problem. I also congratulate The Champion for keeping this important issue in the minds of all concerned.

It is important for record completeness to state that councillors Frank Carbone, Nhan Tran and Zaya Toma also responded. The latter two are newcomers and I think they will turn out to be good councillors. I note that Councillor Toma, showing that he is an IT able councillor of today, has a website to help in raising awareness and to which we the ordinary folk can contribute. I have taken that opportunity and have added some comments to it. It is at www.zayatoma.com.au It was a pleasure dealing with the Champion’s reporter and photographer who acted with professionalism. I am pleased that the notion of persistence was included in the report. Read any literature on success and you will note the notion of persistence covered somewhere. Additionally, there is one attribute consistently displayed by Fairfield Council: anything off the radar ends up under the carpet no matter how deserving.

I agree with Col. Regardless of how valuable his suggestions are about the rubbish problems of our area (and I think he has the right approach) we should be grateful for locals like Charles Gream. He has a passion for the area, and while he might ruffle a few feathers, we need the public conscience to keep our elected officials focused.
