Premier Rees reprimands Lalich

09 Oct, 2009 01:11 PM
Cabramatta MP Nick Lalich could have expressed himself more appropriately, Premier Nathan Rees said regarding comments in favour of abolishing state governments.

Mr Lalich, who entered state parliament in a by-election last October, told the Champion last week that Australia should have just a federal government and local councils.

"Most local members would just become the local mayors," Mr Lalich said, who is also the Mayor of Fairfield.

Mr Rees said yesterday that Mr Lalich could have expressed his argument in a different way.

"I think Nick will concede he probably could have worded that commentary better," the premier said.

"I don't think anyone wants to see councils try to run health systems."

Mr Rees said believed there was a place for state governments and local councils.

"We don't do footpaths, they don't do health systems," he said.

"I think in Australia we've got the balance about right... given our geography.

"I think the government structure is about right."

I'm starting to think wheather Mr Lalich realises that he has only been in his position in parliament for only a little while and unless he can improve the system and make better changes for the future, than what he claims would be better. I think he should re think and carefully think about his position and remember that their both different and both require individual attention in each section. You sound to me, that your complaining and are not coping with the situation. Remember Mr Lalich you put yourself out their in your own position and created it yourself. So if your not happy, and your not satisfied with the structure and your unable to deal with the juggling than do something about it, change it.

It is fairly obvious that Mr Lalich is a liability to the community, the electorate of Cabramatta, the LGA of Fairfield, to himself, his state his Premier and his own party. This year I have witnessed him blame his failings and frustrations on everyone from the voters, local residents, to the opposition, to the media and even the Police Commissioner !!! Everyone seems to be a bother and an incovenience to him. How much longer should everyone have to put up with this guy and his cronies ? 99% of the adverse attention is his own fault - a lesson that Mr Lalich never ever seems to learn. If he was given a diplomatic posting I am sure that he would have us at war with the most peaceful country on earth in a matter of days.

He wants to put himself out of a job ???The only time That State Governments should be suspended or temporarily abolished should be if Liberals get elected

Actually Lalich makes a valid point! The multi-tier system of government is more counter-productive than effective – it leads to blame shifting among the different tiers and keeps the electorate confused with regards to where the buck stops! This is a historical fact in the Australian context, particularly when the Federal and State governments have been from opposing parties. Local governments are not constitutionally recognised and their functions and powers are determined by their respective state government – this another potential source of conflict and blame shifting.

What do you suggest then Roberto, should Mr Lalich continue to stand for government or resign in protest?
