Police smash Cabramatta DVD operation

03 Jul, 2009 04:14 PM
Police have raided two Cabramatta stores allegedly selling a huge number of pirated DVDs, including recent titles like Transformers 2 and Angels & Demons.

On Friday, July 3 at noon, officers from the Green Valley Local Area Command Pro-Active Crime Team, assisted by police from the Cabramatta Local Area Command and staff from the Australian Federation Against Copyright Theft (AFACT), executed search warrants on the neighbouring stores in Hughes Street.

The officers were acting on information that illegal DVDs of latest release movies were being burnt to order at a rate of thousands per day within the computer shop and bargain store.

Police have seized more than 10,000 DVDs and a range of computer equipment including hard drives and DVD burners. The equipment has been taken away for analysis.

Two men, the owner of each store, are assisting police with their inquiries.

Police say the successful operation is the result of a close working relationship with AFACT and its anti-piracy investigators.

Investigations are continuing.
