FAIRFIELD cyclists have joined the fight for the reopening of the Lower Prospect Canal Reserve cycleway.
The bike path runs through Greystanes and Wetherill Park and is part of a network of cycleways that run throughout south-west Sydney.
Western Sydney Cycling Network president Doug Draper said the track had been closed to the public from Hyland Road for two years.
``We did use the path a lot when it was open and we can still use part of i but there's no access through to the Prospect route,'' he said.
Mr Draper said the closure had limited public access to picnic areas and to a scenic ride to Horsley Park.
``As far as we're concerned it's a travesty,'' he said.
``Taking away access to a large picnic ground and to a safe place for parents to take their children is plain wrong.''
The cycleway was closed because of the building of a four-lane road through the Greystanes Boral site to Wetherill Park.
``If we're lucky the road might be finished and the path can be reopened in about a year.''
The Canal Reserve Action Group Inc has been working with Boral on the reopening of the cycleway and has stated the path should be open by ``the end of October''.
Fred Crowe, the spokesman for the Canal Reserve Action Group, said the group was lobbying for a permanent safe crossing of Reconciliation Drive for cyclists. ``At a recent meeting with Boral, the group suggested that a box culvert under the roadway would provide a safe crossing for walkers and cyclists,'' he said.
He said Boral was open to the suggestion and it would seek approval from the RTA.
