Pilger: let's welcome refugees

06 Nov, 2009 03:34 PM
World-renowned author, film-maker and journalist John Pilger, said refugees should be welcomed in Australia in his speech on Friday at Cabramatta High School's Peace Day celebrations.

Statistics from the past five years show that Fairfield has the highest number of refugees in NSW.

Were you a refugee? Let us know below.

Mr Pilger, winner of this year's Sydney Peace Prize, spoke to students from 24 different schools about promoting peace and justice within the world.

He says Australia takes in a very small amount of refugees in comparison to other countries.

Australia's national figure of incoming refugees is approximately 13,000 a year.

Mr Pilger believes countries are ``enriched'' by those who come as refugees.

``The irony is that refugees are almost the ideal immigrants. They show extraordinary courage, imagination and take risks that Australians are meant to admire,'' he said.

Do you think Australia should let more refugees into the country? Tell us your thoughts.

The problem is we treat refugees a lot better than most other countries and spend a lot more than other countries on refugees we take in. For example I think Jordan is one of the countries with the highest intake of refugees but Jordan spends no money on refugees - it has allocated parts of the dessert to make refugee camps and international humanitarian organisations do the rest. Australia provides welfare, housing and other forms of assistance to help refugees to settle into Australia and to integrate into the community. That costs a lot of of money, but I don't think Australians would want to allocate part of our dessert to create refugee camps and let humanitarian organisations do the rest. Australia was built on migrants and has taken more migrants in per capita than most other western nations.

It would be good to say yes to refugees in welcomeing them to our home but unless we can provide them with a safe haven or facilities especially for them to help start their lives again, perhaps allowing them to come to our country in a way of rescue rather than criminal. We all want a safe place and safe home to live in. Most of these people come with nothing and live with nothing. Giving them some helping start eg. educational and so on, will make a difference to them and to us in the near future. But of course we do need to balance the measureable measures of how much we can assist all at once. So we do need to put some restrictions on just how many we will accept. A strict structure of regulations must be in place, and as long as improvements by the other party is progressing. such as (Helping themselves to get ahead). Perhaps this may have some control to some point.

Congratulations to John Pilger for preaching compassion. The scaremongering about 'terrorists' or 'criminals' seems to discount the fact that many times the number of unauthorised immigrants coming by boat arrive through our airports. Remember 9/11? The perpetrators of that terror didn't need to bob around on the open ocean for weeks at a time - they're well funded and well organised. The whole xenophobic hysteria shows we haven't progressed very far as a nation - and the south Asian 'boat people' who had to struggle to get here and gain acceptance should know this better than anyone.
