People power wins back public forum

03 Jul, 2009 07:30 PM
The power of the silenced majority has been felt by Fairfield Council as a last minute turnaround by councillors relaxed harsh restrictions that were set to be imposed on the public forum.

Why do you think the council changed its mind?

During last Tuesday nighr's Fairfield Council meeting, Councillor Lawrence White handed out the amended public forum guidelines to the mayor and other councillors as the item was being heard.

No members of the public gallery or the media were given a copy.

The previous restrictions had refused the right of members of political parties to speak during the public forum and the mayor had to determine a speaker's "genuine interest" before they were granted the right to speak.

These restrictions have been removed from the new document, and residents will be allowed to ask questions provided they are submitted in writing by midday the day before the meeting.

Do you agree with the changes?

I agree with Charles. Kudos should go to those 4 particular councillors for their efforts. It goes to show what can be achieved with some determination and a bit of people power, and standing up to bullies. I for one was amazed at this result. It is a good reminder to the community what can be done if you have asperations for something better for this area, and the faith to see it through. Change is possible. Well done Crs Toma, Rohan, Molluso & Oliveri.

Looks like Council is finally waking up! The Councillors have realised that if their don't change their view they will not have a seat next time around. Now that is a political interest or i should say a genuine interest or not really a public interest. I'm lost!
