Lalich: unfair fee must go

06 Nov, 2009 04:59 PM
Cabramatta MP Nick Lalich has called on the NSW Government to abolish the NSW Photo Card fee for pensioners.

“Charging pensioners a fee to obtain a NSW Photo Card just does not make sense,” Mr Lalich said.

“It’s just ridiculous that pensioners are exempt from fees for licences, driving tests and even registration – and yet they still have to pay the full $44 fee to get a NSW Photo Card.

“With increased security measures because of terrorism and concerns about identity fraud, identification has become an essential part of society.

“The Photo Card is the only form of photo ID pensioners can use to access basic services if they don’t have a drivers licence or passport.

“How are these pensioners meant to do simple things like open a bank account or pick up their grandkids from childcare?

“The fact is the world has changed – you can’t cash a cheque or even pick up football tickets without photo ID.

“This fee is a slap in the face to thousands of pensioners who do not need a passport or no longer carry a valid licence.”

Mr Lalich said he would lobby Assisting Transport Minister David Borger to have the fee permanently abolished.

“This is a fee that many people simply can’t afford in these tough times and pensioners tell me all the time that they want it waived,” Mr Lalich said.

“We shouldn’t be slugging pensioners with absurd charges when they’re already doing it tough trying to make ends meet.

“We should be doing everything we can to ensure that they have easy access to essential services.

“Times are only getting tougher and pensioners are among those who feel it most.

“I’ll be taking this up with Assisting Transport Minister David Borger so that he knows exactly how much this fee affects pensioners in my electorate.”

I think this is a joke, his a member of the Government his making the call on. He could raise this in Parliament and really make an issue of it - or he can raise it in the media and try to distance himself from his unpopular Government to win a few votes. Lets watch this space.

Well its about time, I see some good work start to take place by you Mr Lalich. Its good to see you taking an interest in the welfare of these pensioners. But can I suggest you also consider, assisting in the elderly with perhaps a walking path and bus shelters protecting them from the heat and weather. Many parts of Cabramatta and other surrounding suburbs are in need and is still worth investigating. I look forward to your actions.

This is a claim for the battlers by a man who pockets nearly $200 000 intaxpayers money via his two salaries. If Nick Lalich would donate his 2nd mayoral salary towards this worthwhile cause - nearly 2000 pensioners in Fairfield City could have the card for free. Come on Nick show a generous spirit.

It's good to see Nick Lalich help his fellow pensioners. Perhaps he could do more for them at Council level and provide them with footpaths so that they have something sturdy to walk on. Now that Nick Lalich has raised this issue I expect him to ask the Minister in Parliament the same question if he wants any credibility. Joseph Adams Australian Business Party

I hope this isn't just an empty promise from Lalich..

He's only complaining about the fee because when he loses his Cabramatta seat in 2011.. he would be a pensioner and expect not to pay for the NSW Photo Card fee. So basically he's preparing himself for retirement!

The new strategy for Labor MP's in key seats will be to attack their own government 'Oh yeah NSW Labor is horrible, but I'm not one of them, I'm just a good local member' Well Mr Lalich - I hope you will be asking these questions in question time and not just in the local media, it would be even better if you moved a private members bill!!!

I notice Councillors are quite active on the other topics in this formers, but no Labor supporters are defending Nick Lalich here - poor Nick Lalich, only two years to go and he can retire.
